The Guild of Harwich Artists * Harwichport

Art for all

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Founded by Harwich artist Georgia Dearborn, the Guild of Harwich Artists is a close-knit group of 90 individuals who share a passion for art. Membership in the guild is restricted to Harwich residents and taxpayers. The artists get together year-round to paint, put on exhibitions, take art classes, and of course, discuss art. The nonprofit guild, which has existed for 30 years, opened a new exhibit space called The Gallery of the Guild of Harwich Artists in 2007.

The gallery features oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, and collages. Director Chris Banks' fondness for the guild--and their new gallery--is clear. She explains that the evolution of the cooperative gallery was a labor of love for all the members and that an atmosphere of camaraderie prevails. "We have a great committee, everyone is active and involved," says Banks. Members share the costs of renting the building. All the artists can rent gallery space to display their work. Members also take turns manning the front desk.

Free "Meet the Artist" events take place nearly every Saturday throughout the year and feature different artists each time. "We're going to paint no matter what, and what sells is gravy," says Banks. "If you paint what you like, somebody else will like it too."

The Gallery of the Guild of Harwich Artists is open year-round, although during the winter it's best to call before stopping by. -- Libby Bouck
