Every trip to Chatham should include a visit to the Chatham Fish Pier. Catch a glimpse of one of the Cape's oldest professions as fishermen--on boats big and small--unload their haul most afternoons. While at the pier, take the Beachcomber shuttle boat out to North Beach for the day, and maybe even check out a few seals along the way.
Take a walk along Shore Road from the pier to find Chatham Light. This still-active Coast Guard station has a 48-foot tall tower and is open for tours on scheduled Wednesdays. Cap off the evening watching the sunset at Lighthouse Beach, one of the most popular and beautiful beaches in Chatham.
If you need a book to accompany your trip to the beach, peek into Yellow Umbrella Books on Main Street for used and new titles or explore Eldredge Public Library's extensive collection. Pick up that wiffleball bat or extra towel at The Mayflower Shop, a downtown gift shop since 1885, and grab a "Chatham" sweatshirt or "Cape Cod" hat at Chatham T Company. blah blah blah
Stop by downtown Chatham for some delicious homemade fudge or chocolate-dipped strawberries from Chatham Candy Manor. Other handmade confections are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. For some of the sweets you grew up with, try the Chatham Penny Candy Store, which has all your favorites as well as a dizzying number of salt-water taffy flavors. Across the street you'll find The Squire, whose lobster bisque and clam chowder are not to be missed. Around the corner, the Impudent Oyster serves all sorts of creative seafood dishes in an intimate setting.
If you find yourself in Chatham during the summer months, follow your ears to the weekly band concerts held at Kate Gould Park. Make sure to get there early and put a blanket down, as the brass band can attract thousands of listeners on warm summer nights. If you're more the sporting type, head over to Veterans Field and catch a Chatham Anglers game. The Cape Cod Baseball League is where many future major leaguers get their start, and with no admission fee (though donations are encouraged), it's hard to find a better way to spend an evening.
