The Scottish Bakehouse in Vineyard Haven has put the flavor back in fast food, making it one of the most popular eateries on the island all year long.

Open from early morning until early evening, this is the perfect spot to grab breakfast on the way to the beach, early supper on the way home, or to satisfy any quick-bite craving in between. Try an omelet or an egg sandwich made with organic island eggs, or maybe just a muffin and coffee to go. The menu changes, but recent lunch and supper items included spicy peanut noodles with shrimp, coconut tofu with red rice and pineapple, BBQ pork sandwiches, and baked chicken with mashed potatoes.

And then there are the baked goods . . . Danishes, cakes, cookies, croissants, pies, lemon bars, berry turnovers, key lime tarts, whole grain breads--and a whole lot more. There are a handful of stools inside and picnic tables in the yard, or just take your meal to the beach. --By C.C.
